Mrs. Jewell Maxine Hutchison Morton, age 91, passed away on March 13, 2026, in Paris, Tennessee. Born on March 21, 1934, in Crockett County, she was the third of eight children born to Nettie Lou Bostick Hutchison and Richard Hill Hutchison.
A graduate of Hamlett-Robertson Schools in Crockett Mills, Jewell was an active student who participated in Future Homemakers of America, played on the girls’ Tigers basketball team, and served as a cheerleader. She married Horace Morton, Jr. on August 12, 1953, and together they shared 66 years of marriage until his death on December 25, 2019. They farmed for twenty-four years in the Bethesda community of Crockett County and later continued their agricultural life on their farm in Palmersville. Jewell also worked for eighteen years with the Henry County School System at Cottage Grove before retiring in 2002.
She was deeply devoted to her family and community. Her home in Friendship was always bright with fresh flowers from her garden, many of which she arranged for the altar at church. An active member of Bethesda and Emmanuel churches in Crockett County, she gave generously of her time to Vacation Bible School programs and supported all of her children’s school and church activities, sewing countless costumes and baking for countless events. Later in life she was a member of the Paris Seventh Day Adventist Church and resided at Eiffel Gardens in Paris.
Jewell is survived by her children, Debra Ann (Garry) Grimes of Paris, James Russell (Janet) Morton of Cottage Grove, Mark Anthony (Christy) Morton of Palmersville, and John Osborne (Kim) Morton of Paris; her grandchildren, Meredith (Dusty) Haynes, Paige (Lee) Woods, Blair (James) DiMarco, Andy (Lindsey) Morton, Justin (Brittany) Morton, Blake (Kelsey) Morton, Charlie (Taylor) Morton, Allyson Morton, Shelby (Collin) Dougherty, Cody Morton, and Libby Morton; her great-grandchildren, Emma Stallings, Bo Morton Woods, Max Woods, Cameron Morton, Neely Morton, Wesley Morton, Dottie Willoughby, Chandler Rimmer, and Chloe Rimmer; and her great-great-grandson, Brady Stallings. She is also survived by her sister Betty Hutchison (Gerald) Ferrell, brother Steve Hutchison, daughter-in-law Lynn Williams, sister-in-law Monrose Churchwell Hutchison, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Richard Kenneth Morton and grandson Grant Stallings, as well as her parents, husband, and many beloved siblings and extended family members.
