Jerry Richard Handwerker
October 16, 1955— March 7, 2026
Springfield, MO
Jerry Richard Handwerker passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026. Born on October 16, 1955, in Memphis to John James “Jim” Handwerker and Geraldine “Jerry” (Sullivan) Handwerker, he was the seventh of their ten children. He grew up in Whitehaven and attended Catholic schools in Memphis, including St. Thomas Elementary, St. Joseph Elementary, and Bishop Byrne High School. Following high school, he became a house painter, a trade he practiced with steady hands, careful attention to detail, and quiet dedication for more than fifty years.
Jerry was known for his calm and generous spirit. One of ten siblings, he cherished the lively, loving chaos of his large family and was always willing to help anyone without expecting anything in return. He found deep joy in the outdoors, transforming even the plainest yard into a beautiful garden. He loved tending his flowers, sitting by a good bonfire, enjoying a Corona, and sharing stories with friends. After moving to Springfield, Missouri, seven years ago, he formed a special circle of friends at Gunny’s Mill, where he was affectionately known as “Uncle Jerry.”
Above all, Jerry adored his daughter, Kathryn Mary Handwerker, whom he called his “Angel.” He instilled in her the confidence that she could achieve anything she set her mind to and offered her unwavering support and love. He often said he was the luckiest dad in the world, though Kathryn knew she was the lucky one. Even through a long battle with cancer, he lived by his motto of “happy thoughts,” facing each day with dignity and grace.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bobby Handwerker, sister Julie Bratton, brother-in-law Kevin Grauer, nephews Shea and Beau Grauer, and great-niece Chloe Grauer-Lea. He is survived by his daughter Kathryn Mary Handwerker, daughter-in-law Latoya Fortino, and grandson Nate Fortino, as well as his sisters Gail Handwerker Grauer and Sister Mary Samuel Handwerker, brothers Tim, Michael, Danny, Mark, and Phillip Handwerker, sister-in-law Benita Handwerker, stepsons Wayne and Jeff Logan and their families, Gail Gilmore, numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends who will remember him with great affection.
