Channing, TX
Jerry Ray Rentfro, a lifelong Texas Panhandle rancher, passed away peacefully at his home in Channing, Texas, on March 13, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on December 20, 1931, in Amarillo, Jerry lived a life defined by independence, hard work, and dedication to his family and community.
Jerry's early years were spent in Amarillo, where he graduated from Amarillo High School, becoming the first in his family to earn a high school diploma. He attended West Texas State University for one year and Texas Tech University for another before being drafted into the United States Army and serving during the Korean Conflict.
In 1955, he married Beverly in Amarillo, and together they built a life grounded in love and partnership until her passing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tode and Mildred Rentfro, and his brother, June Rentfro. Jerry took pride in living life on his own terms and found deep satisfaction in supporting the community that had shaped him. He served with quiet commitment in the Panhandle Livestock Association, on the Hartley/Dallam County Hospital District Board, and as treasurer of First Baptist Church in Channing.
He is survived by his sons, Jerry Don Rentfro and his wife Deana of Dumas, and Jim Rentfro and his wife Jeanne of Channing. His legacy continues through his grandchildren—Tara Bachtel, Toby Jim Rentfro, Jerry Michael Rentfro, and Elizabeth Drew Hill—and his great-grandchildren—Talen, Bailey, Brooklyn, Blaire, Tatum, Tucker, Kensie, Brinley, and Channing—who remain a living testament to the family he cherished.
