Harlan, IA

Jerald “Jerry” or “Bugs” Steven Mahlberg was born on April 8, 1957, the son of Henry and Norine (Walton) Mahlberg in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and later confirmed his faith at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. He also received his first communion and education through the eighth grade at St. Mary’s Catholic School. He finished his education from Harlan High School.

Following his education, Jerry moved to Council Bluffs where he worked at various places in the area, spending the longest time with Frito Lay. It was there that he met Janet Fronk, and the couple was united in marriage on August 31, 1981, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their union was blessed with three children: Matt, Josh, and Anna. After many years of marriage, Jerry and Janet later went their separate ways.

Jerry eventually relocated to Seattle, Washington, where he lived for more than 20 years before returning to the area and making his home in Harlan.

Jerry enjoyed spending time outdoors and especially liked camping, fishing, hunting for Morel mushrooms, and riding his e-bike.

Jerry passed away at his home in Harlan on Friday, March 6, 2026, at the age of 68 years, ten months and 26 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John (Pat) Mahlberg; and sisters-in-law: Linda Mahlberg and Carrie Mahlberg.

He is survived by his three children: Matt (Arlene) Sollazzo of Honey Creek, Josh (Sadie) Mahlberg of Osage, Missouri and Anna (Omar) Vargas of Elkhorn, Nebraska; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings: Joe Mahlberg of Harlan, Nancy (Don) Langfeldt of Bellevue, Nebraska, Jeff Mahlberg of Moville, Matt (Julie) Mahlberg of Seattle, Washington, Kathy (Dave) Goede of Harlan, Janet (John) Duschanek of Council Bluffs, Ed (Amy) Mahlberg of Des Moines, Andy Mahlberg of Panama, Christy (Curt) Mumm of Corley; many nieces and nephews; many cousins; and other family members and friends.

Jerry will be cremated and the family will hold a Celebration of Life at a later date. We will update the service day, time and place here when the family has decided.
