Jerry Lewis Wright

Passed March 7, 2026

Lumberton, MS

Senior Chief Petty Officer Jerry Lewis Wright, U.S. Navy, Ret., age 79, of Lumberton, Mississippi, passed away peacefully in the early hours of March 7 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. A proud Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient, he served his country with courage and dedication as a U.S. Navy hospital corpsman. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who cherished his family deeply.

Born to Jack Willard Wright and Aunetta Gilberta Wright Keniston (née Whited), Jerry was accepted into West Texas State University in the 1960s but was soon drafted. He answered the call, joined the Navy, and trained as a hospital corpsman, serving alongside Marines. He completed Marine training as well, enduring boot camp twice. During the early years of the Vietnam War, he provided medical care to wounded soldiers on the front lines under dangerous conditions. Seriously wounded in a mortar attack, he was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice.

Jerry continued his naval career for 27 years, retiring as Senior Chief Petty Officer. Though the experiences of war remained with him, he faced them with quiet strength and a steadfast faith in Jesus Christ, supported always by his devoted wife, Karen. He raised five daughters and one son, delighting in family picnics, watching football, and time spent with his growing family. An accomplished swimmer, carpenter, motorcyclist, and competitive golfer, he was also deeply involved in his church, serving in the care ministry and as a Sunday School teacher. His tremendous sense of humor, stories, and laughter remain treasured memories for all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his beloved wife, Karen Wright (née Boehning); his children, Kara Dawn Wall (Mark Wall), Jerry Wright Jr. (Kim Tucker), Temple Kassing (Ricky Kassing), Heidi Wright, Sharra Rea (Daniel Rea), and Deidre Ladner; his brothers, Jack Wright, James Wright, and Jesse Wright; as well as eighteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly. His courage, humor, and faith will continue to guide and inspire his family, who loved him deeply and will miss him greatly.
