Sylvan Grove, KS
Jerry Lee Ostermann, age 75, died peacefully at his home in Sylvan Grove, Kansas, on March 11, 2026, with his loving wife and son by his side.
Born on May 17, 1950, in Ellsworth, Kansas, to Don and Elda (Richard) Ostermann, Jerry grew up on a family farm along the river. Surrounded by horses, livestock, fishing, and bow hunting, he discovered early the joy of creation. When his father gave him a welder in eighth grade, his inventive spirit was unleashed. By age 13, he was building polished, professional equipment for the farm, beginning with a three-wheel go-kart that brought delight to cousins and friends alike.
Jerry graduated from Kansas State University in 1973 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. A lifelong innovator, he became an agricultural and biological engineer who held at least nine U.S. patents in livestock-weighing and sorting technology. His calm persistence, optimism, and quiet determination earned him recognition as Kansas Young Engineer of the Year. He served as State President of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, as an officer in Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, and as president of the Kansas Manufacturing Association. He also served his country as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Deeply committed to his community, Jerry gave 13 years to the Sylvan Unified School Board, including time as president, helping guide a beneficial school merger. A talented athlete, he held track records with the Sylvan Sprint Relay team and won a state championship in indoor track and field. He remained a lifelong Kansas State University and football fan.
Above all, Jerry took greatest pride in his family. He was a devoted husband of 51 years to Becky (Smith) Ostermann, always supportive and encouraging, and a loving father who consistently championed his son, Chad. He is survived by Becky; Chad of DeSoto, Kansas; his sister Linda Laird of Topeka, Kansas; his brother Scott (Chris) of Abilene, Kansas; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Preceding him in death were his parents and brother Alan.
Jerry will be remembered for his inventive spirit, kindness, faith, and unwavering love for those closest to him.
