Jean Callahan
October 7, 1942— March 7, 2026
Quincy, MA
Jean Callahan, 83, daughter of the late Reverend Donald and Nancy Strong, passed away on March 7, 2026, following complications from a fall. She will be remembered for her deep love of family and friends, her abiding faith, kindness, and keen appreciation for beauty. A unique and special woman, Jean carried herself with grace and elegance, always dressing impeccably with coiffed hair, polished nails, and coordinated outfits, believing that one should always present her best self.
Born a preacher’s kid, Jean moved frequently as a child but cherished her high school years in East Rockaway, Long Island, New York, where she was the belle of the ball. She remained close to those high school friends throughout her life and held a lifelong affection for 1950s music. She attended Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts, and went on to enjoy a varied and fulfilling career that included positions at John Hancock Insurance in Boston, in banking, at Howard Johnson’s corporate office, as an office manager in marketing and research, and finally as a temporary employee at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. In retirement, she found joy in volunteering at a local nursing home, where she performed monthly with a musical group to entertain residents, and at Cape Cod Hospital’s gift shop, where she was honored as Volunteer of the Month.
Jean’s love of beauty was evident in her well-appointed homes and gardens. She delighted in entertaining family and friends, cherished time near the water, and enjoyed beautiful residences on the ocean in Hull and on John’s Pond in Mashpee, Massachusetts. She was also a devoted pet owner, especially to her beloved Maltese, Lexi, who remained faithfully by her side. In her final year, she moved to Discovery Village in Quincy, where she formed warm friendships and embraced the community, staff, and activities, particularly the cheerful “Mix and Mingle” gatherings.
Predeceased by her husband of 30 years, John (Jack) T. Callahan, with whom she shared many happy adventures boating, flying in his plane, traveling to Europe and Hawaii, and wintering in West Palm Beach, Florida, Jean is survived by her sister Janet (Garrett) Powell of Hingham, her niece Heather (Jon) Jarvis, and nephews Jake (Ginna) Jarvis, Sam Jarvis, Daniel Jarvis, and Hayden Jarvis, as well as Sue Anne and Renay DiLazzaro. A beautiful soul and bright light, Jean touched everyone she met and will be deeply missed by all who loved her.
