Jay Darrell Story

Jay Darrell Story, 88, of Powell, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 11, 1937, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to Robert Leo Story and Naomi Ellen Gilliam Story, Jay spent his career at ORNL, retiring after 38 years of dedicated service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Naomi Story, and his brother, Mike Story. Jay is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lillian Trotter Story; his son, Jim Story (Kelly) of Powell; his daughter, Ann Story Hastings (Anthony) of Savannah, Tennessee; his sister, Ann Story Williams (AL) of Knoxville; and his cherished grandchildren, Abby, Emily and Ryan Story, and Samuel and Lilly Ann Hastings.

Those who knew Jay will remember a man who lived a long and steady life, deeply devoted to his family and grounded in the community he called home for nearly nine decades. His quiet strength and enduring love for Lillian, his children, and his grandchildren remain the heart of the legacy he leaves behind.
