Janie Lee Carson
February 9, 1930— March 10, 2026
Amarillo, TX
Janie Lee Carson of Amarillo, Texas, passed away on March 10, 2026. She spent her final years at the Craig Senior Living Center, where she was lovingly surrounded by her devoted nurses, caregivers, and her daughter Sharla at the time of her passing.
Born on February 9, 1930, in Electra, Texas, to Lloyd and Madeline Grisham, Janie moved with her family to Odessa at age nine. She had one older sister, Sue. The family later settled in Clovis, New Mexico, where she completed high school and trained as a telephone operator. There she met and married Jack E. Grundy in 1947. Together they had two daughters and a son. After Jack’s death in 1963, Janie moved her young children to Amarillo to be near her parents. She remarried in 1966 to Chuck Carson.
Janie dedicated 37 years to Southwestern Bell Telephone, retiring as a service assistant and trainer. Her trainees affectionately called her “Momma Duck” as she led them through the operator boards, and she was known to her many longtime colleagues as “Goodie.” Her warm smile and engaging personality created lasting friendships. A lifetime member of the CWA Union and Telephone Pioneers, she later volunteered for 23 years in the gift shop at BSA Hospital, where her generosity and cheerful greetings touched countless families and coworkers. Janie was a devoted Southern Baptist who faithfully attended First Baptist Church with her son Keith, a young man with special needs who shared her beautiful smile. She found joy in ceramics, oil painting, traveling, and playing cards with friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and her sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Clarence Miller of Colorado Springs. Janie is survived by her daughters Linda Morlan and husband Rob of Manitou Springs, Sharla Jackson and husband Kit of Amarillo, her son John Keith Grundy of Amarillo, granddaughter Madeline Wells and husband Patrick of Colorado Springs, grandson Ronnie Hamilton of Colorado Springs, five great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and her dear friend Nancy Conley, whom she considered another daughter.
