Janet Elizabeth Hukkanen passed away peacefully in Emerson, New Jersey. Born on January 6, 1941, in Jersey City, New Jersey, she lived a life defined by compassion, creativity, and a warm smile that could brighten the darkest day.
Janet centered her life on caring for others, including her family, friends, community, and the many animals she welcomed into her world. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Michele and husband Al, her son John Paul and wife Sara, and her five adored grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Sofia, Jacob, and John, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy. She was predeceased by her husband, John Hukkanen, who passed in 1998.
For many years, Janet was a beloved member of the Little Ferry community. She volunteered at St. Margaret’s Church, served as an aide at Memorial School, acted as a Girl Scout leader, and cared for both family and neighborhood children. Her patience, creativity, and gentle encouragement left a lasting impression on the many young lives she guided. In her younger years, she worked as a travel agent, a role that sparked a lifelong love of travel. She visited many cities in Europe and later enjoyed cruises with family and friends, including a memorable Alaskan cruise.
Janet’s creative spirit shone through her love of drawing, painting, and gardening. She found great happiness in music and concerts. Above all, she had a remarkable ability to bring people together. Her home was always open, and she hosted joyful backyard pool parties filled with laughter, conversation, and card games. Those who knew her remember her as gentle, creative, and endlessly kind—a woman whose warmth made everyone feel at home and whose compassion touched countless lives. Her legacy of generosity and deep connection will live on in the hearts of her family and all those whose lives she brightened.
