Wilmington, DE
Jane G. Brereton, age 97, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on March 14, 2026. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 3, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Fannie (Knowlton) Geyer.
A graduate of the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing of Philadelphia in 1950, Jane devoted her career to nursing. She began as a visiting nurse in the Philadelphia area before moving with her husband, the late Robert “Bob” Brereton, to New Castle, Delaware, where she served as a supervisor at the Delaware State Hospital. In retirement, she continued to give of herself through volunteer work with the Suicide Hotline of Delaware and Meals on Wheels.
Jane found deep joy in her family, especially time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved the water, spending many happy hours boating on the Delaware and Elk Rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. She and Bob were active members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 35 years, teaching safe boating classes, performing vessel inspections, and assisting stranded boaters. She also tended beautiful flower and vegetable gardens and took pride in canning her own tomato sauce. A longtime member of Immanuel Episcopal Church on the Green in Old New Castle since approximately 1955, she faithfully served on the Altar Guild.
In addition to her parents and husband, Jane was preceded in death by her sister, Ellyn McKeever; son-in-law, Joseph Miller; and grandson, Jason Miller. She is survived by her children, Marshal H. Brereton (Susan), Sara B. Miller, Andrew T. Brereton (Carrie), and John F. Brereton (Kathryn); seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
