Jane Eller Grimes, 87, of Lexington, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, March 12, 2026.
Born in Galax, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Polly Eller. Jane devoted more than 30 years to education as a high school history teacher, inspiring students at East Forsyth High School, Lexington High School, and East Davidson High School. Her passion for teaching and her dedication to her students earned her recognition across the state.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm Grimes III.
Jane is survived by her son, Bret Pedigo and his fiancée, Leslie Shaffer, of Lexington; her grandchildren, Rachel Pedigo Scanlon (Trevor Scanlon) and Alec Pedigo, both of Raleigh, North Carolina; her brother, Johnnie Eller of Atlanta, Georgia; her sister, Linda Cooper (Ronnie Cooper) of Bolton, Tx; her sister-in-law, Perry Van Dyke of Raleigh; niece Tiffany Wybrow of ChristChurch, NZ; nephew Richard Eller of Atlanta, Georgia; nephew Glenn Cooper of Austin, Tx; nephew Mike Cooper of Round Rock, Tx; niece Elizabeth Van Dyke Morgan of Raleigh; nephew Chris Van Dyke (Alston Van Dyke) of Charlotte, North Carolina; and her extended families at Grace Episcopal Church, Yarborough’s Restaurant and the Charity League of Lexington
Jane will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and ever-present smile. She was also a fierce advocate for children, civil rights, human rights, and environmental stewardship. Throughout her life, she stood firmly for the causes in which she believed. She was an active member of the Charity League of Lexington whose purpose is to improve the health, education, and welfare of children in Lexington and Davidson County. She was also a devoted member of Grace Episcopal Church, where she served on the church’s Vestry.
A funeral service will be held Saturday March 21, 2026 at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Grace Episcopal Church, 419 South Main Street in Lexington; Interment in the church columbarium.
