Mountain Green, UT

Jane Christine McFarland, 15, of Mountain Green, Utah, passed away at home on March 7, 2010. Born on May 27, 2010, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Jennie and Jared McFarland, she spent her early years briefly in Colorado before growing up primarily in Mountain Green.

From a young age, Jane cherished her older brothers and sisters, always eager to join in their activities and welcoming each new sibling who joined the family through marriage. She embraced the outdoors with enthusiasm, quickly mastering skiing, biking, and every other adventure she could find. She joined the Snowbasin ski team, delighting in tackling any part of the mountain, and later loved teaching her family new tricks on the slopes. In summer she found joy mountain biking with friends, flying down the trails. At around ten she decided to take up hunting with her brothers, relishing the camping, hiking, and shared snacks. After completing hunter’s education, she participated in several hunts, including a backcountry elk hunt, and held the family record with a successful 575-yard shot on a four-point elk.

Jane discovered a deep love for drawing and sketching, exploring new techniques and mediums with growing skill. She entered her artwork, crafts, and photographs in the fair, earning many blue ribbons. She also learned sewing from her mother and grandmothers Christine and Lorie, creating blankets, coats, dresses, bags, and her beloved plushies.

A sophomore at Morgan High School, Jane was an active member of the FFA, Rodeo Club, and Mountain Bike team. She performed in the Newsies play and looked forward to more theatrical opportunities. Through FFA she developed a passion for animals and aspired to become a veterinarian. She was enrolled in a veterinary assistant class and hoped to secure an internship that summer, with plans to attend Utah State University alongside her friends. She found great fulfillment in helping others experience the outdoors, recently working as a lifeguard and archery instructor for Scouts of America at Camp Tracey, and she was excited about the possibility of attending the World Scout Jamboree in Poland.

Jane is survived by her parents, Jennie and Jared McFarland; her siblings, Maya Kohler (Carson), Alex McFarland (Taysia), Jaxson McFarland (Karli), and Isabel Canfield (Corbin); her three precious nieces, June and Indy Kohler and Ruby McFarland; and her grandparents, Kim and Lorie Walters and Tom and Christine McFarland. She was preceded in death by her brother, Mason McFarland.
