James Slater, age 82, of Mapleton, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2026 at his home.
Born in Racine, Wisconsin on April 11, 1943, Jim was the son of Donald and Marion (Hainka) Slater. He moved with his family to Mapleton, where he graduated from Mapleton High School. In February 1964, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving until his honorable discharge in February 1968 as a second class boilerman (E5).
In March 1968, Jim began a long career with National Poly. He transferred to Newark, Ohio in 1977 and then to Streamwood, Illinois in 1980. After the company was sold to Southern Bag, he continued working there until his retirement in August 1998 after thirty years of service. He then returned to Mapleton to spend his later years.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Roxanne Slater of Coshocton, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Anthony Slater; and his two brothers, Donald Jr. and Ronald Slater. A military burial will be held at Union Cemetery in Mapleton at a later date.
