James Robert Wise, Sr., a devoted family man, skilled technician, and passionate aviator, passed away on March 13, 2026, at the age of 89 in Port Neches, Texas. Born on March 7, 1937, in Orange, Texas, James lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a love for the simple pleasures that brought him joy.
James honorably served his country as an electronic technician in the United States Air Force, exemplifying commitment and technical expertise. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career at P.D. GlyCOL in Beaumont, where he contributed his skills as a laboratory technician for 37 years before retiring. His steadfast work ethic and precision left an indelible mark on those who worked alongside him.
In 1968, James achieved a personal milestone by earning his charter pilot license, a testament to his lifelong passion for aviation. He not only soared through the skies as a pilot but also imparted his knowledge as a flight instructor, inspiring others with his love for flying. Air shows were among his favorite events, where his enthusiasm for planes was vividly evident.
James cherished many hobbies that enriched his life outside of work and service. A gifted photographer, he was often behind the camera, capturing moments of family and friends alike. He delighted in videotaping his grandson’s football games, preserving memories that his loved ones will treasure. Additionally, he enjoyed watching and recording movies, as well as the simple joy of mowing his own lawn and indulging in his fondness for banana splits.
James is survived by his daughter, Gayletta Wise, and her boyfriend, Brian Dixon of Nederland. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Chad Simmons, Jeremiah Wise, Alettra Hudson, Ashley M. Wise, Christie DeVillier Toups, and Troy DeVillier. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Brett Hudson, Adaline Gaylord, Camdyn Simmons, Bayleigh DeVillier, and Belle Toups. He is remembered with affection by his sister, Gail Hinson and her husband Jerald, and his brother, Roger Dickey and wife Karen.
He joins in peaceful rest his parents, Dave Bujard and Ada Beatrice Liston; his beloved wife, Betty Jane Wise; his son, JR Wise; and his great-grandson, Luke Allan Simmons, who preceded him in death.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday, March 21, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., with the funeral beginning at 2:00 p.m., at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home in Nederland. Interment to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Nederland.
James’s enduring spirit, marked by his dedication to family, his service, his love of flight, and his warm, caring nature, leaves an enduring legacy that will resonate deeply within the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him. His life stands as a testament to quiet strength, loyalty, and the simple joys that define a well-lived existence.
