James Robert Oaks, age 75 of Eldora, died Sunday, March 8, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City. Born February 6, 1951, in New York, he graduated from high school and college there before marrying Kimberly Ann Root. The couple made their home in Oaks Corners, New York, until moving to Eldora, Iowa, several years ago.
James spent his lifetime working on cars and generously shared his knowledge and passion by teaching auto mechanics in high school for many years. His deep love for automobiles extended to racing, and NASCAR held a special place in his heart.
He is survived by his wife, Kimberly; their daughter, Rachel Oaks; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his brother, Tom Oaks (Kathy); and his sisters, Kathy Fisher (Glenn) and Susan Oaks (Dennis Hess).
