James Richard Smith

April 27, 1950 March 12, 2026

Cedar Hill, MO

James Richard Smith, affectionately known as "Smitty," passed away peacefully at his home on March 12, 2026, at the age of 75. Born on April 27, 1950, in Detroit, Michigan, he was the son of Clarice Estell (née Thorne) and Abbie Junior Smith, both of whom preceded him in death. Smitty graduated from Northwest High School in House Springs, Missouri, in 1969 and later earned an Associate’s Degree in Computer Technology from Jefferson Community College. His strong work ethic guided him through a successful career in his field.

In his younger years, Smitty had a deep enthusiasm for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. After retiring, he devoted his time to the things he loved most. He founded the annual “Good Ole Boys” fishing tournament, a tradition that will continue in his honor. He was an avid gardener with a lifelong love for dogs, and in later years he developed a great fondness for bird watching. Those who knew him will remember his genuine nature, kind heart, impeccable integrity, and his memorable, hearty laugh. He possessed a sentimental quality and offered a loving presence to everyone whose life he touched.

Smitty is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Sonya Smith (Grimes); his daughters, Cindy Vogel-Langley (Craig) and Toni Voss; four grandchildren, Cody (Jenna) Vogel, Allyson Cutter, Brady Cutter, and Savannah Vogel; one great-grandchild expected in November 2026; his siblings, Jerry Smith, Mary Maxwell (Joe Maxwell, deceased), and Shirley Smith Godsil; brother-in-law Edward Olson (Judy Olson, deceased); and many cherished nieces, nephews, friends, and family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Judy (Smith) Olson.

His memory will remain a treasure in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
