James R. “Snib” Hockenbery passed away on March 8, 2026, at the James Cancer Hospital at the age of 86. Born on January 31, 1940, in West Jefferson, Ohio, he was the son of James W. Hockenbery and Ruthe V. (Hutchison) Barker.
For more than thirty-five years, Jim served his community with integrity, courage, and a deep commitment to justice. He began his law enforcement career with the West Jefferson Police Department, where he earned the trust and respect of fellow officers and residents alike. He later joined the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, known for his professionalism, steady leadership, and compassion. He concluded his career as a special agent and Crime Scene Investigator with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, then continued his service as an active member of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Auxiliary.
Above all, Jim cherished his family. He took great pride in the life he and his loved ones built together, one grounded in loyalty, hard work, laughter, and lasting memories.
He was preceded in death by his father and stepmother, James and Mildred Hockenbery, his mother Ruthe Barker, his grandson Joshua Bateman, and several other family members. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Abbagail (Hannah) Hockenbery; his children, Lisa Hockenbery, Beth Ann (Kevin) Bateman, J.P. (Ashley) Hockenbery, Lynnette (Tony) Ridenour, Steve (Lisa) Thornsberry, and Laura Thornsberry (fiancé John Reiterman); and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
