Born on September 16, 1931, in the small town of Marston in New Madrid County, Missouri, James's journey through life was one marked by courage, kindness, and a boundless curiosity for the world around him. He peacefully departed this world on March 5, 2026, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered and celebrated by all who had the privilege of knowing him.James was the beloved son of Robert Russell and Hazel Holland, and grew up alongside his siblings, Harold and Louise. As a young man, he was instilled with values of hard work and dedication, which would come to define his life. Following in these footsteps, James proudly served his country with honor and distinction, dedicating 20 years to the United States Army and retiring with the esteemed rank of Lieutenant Colonel.After his military service, James transitioned to the world of real estate, where he thrived for another 30 years, leaving an indelible mark on the industry and the community he served. His professional life was complemented by his active involvement in the Pacesetter Lions Club in Huntsville, Alabama, where he made lifelong friends and contributed to countless community projects.Outside of his career and service, James was a man of varied interests and passions. He loved to travel, exploring new places and cultures with an open heart and an eager spirit. A devoted fan of Alabama football, he cheered on the Crimson Tide with unwavering enthusiasm. He was also an avid coin collector, finding joy and intrigue in the stories each piece held.Those who knew James will remember him for his great sense of humor, his knack for storytelling, and his ability to light up a room with his presence. His warmth and kindness endeared him to many, and he was well-liked by all who crossed his path.James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Fran, his parents, Robert and Hazel, his brother Harold, and his sister Louise. He leaves behind a loving family who will carry forward his legacy: his children, James (Anne), Janet (Sam) Appleton, Jay (Michele), and Jerry (Carol); eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, all of whom will cherish his memory and the invaluable lessons he imparted.In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in James's memory to the Lions Club of Alabama, an organization close to his heart.The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating James's life at a visitation on April 25th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. This will be followed by a full military funeral at Maple Hill Cemetery, where James will be honored for his lifetime of service and dedication.As we say goodbye to James Olly Holland, let us remember the laughter, the stories, and the love he shared so freely. May his spirit continue to inspire us to live fully, love deeply, and serve others with the same grace and generosity that he exemplified every day of his life.
