Preserve forever →James Michael Muldoon
April 23, 1935— March 12, 2026
Voorhees, NJ
James Michael Muldoon, emeritus professor of history at Rutgers University at Camden, invited Research Scholar in Residence at the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University, and Cambridge Rhodes Scholar, died in Voorhees, New Jersey, on March 12, 2026, a few weeks before his 91st birthday. Born to Catherine, née Hurley, and Robert Muldoon in Somerville, Massachusetts, he spent much of his life in the New England area and South Jersey.
He earned his undergraduate degree from Iona University, a master’s from Boston College, and a doctorate in history from Cornell University. A distinguished scholar, James published extensively on medieval history, the Church, spiritual conquest, the conquest of the Americas, and the developing world order. His intellectual curiosity never diminished, and he remained deeply engaged with learning throughout his life. A man of strong faith and proud of his Irish heritage, he had once considered the priesthood. Though that path was not his, he maintained a lifelong passion for canon law and church history. He also found delight in the maritime traditions of New England, pursuing shipbuilding as a hobby by crafting intricate model ships.
Above all, James cherished his family. He took special joy in his grandchildren and his new great-grandson. He was predeceased by his first wife, Teresa, in 1985 and his second wife, Judith Fitzpatrick, in 2016. He is survived by his daughter, Margaret “Maggie” (Dean) DelSignore of Haddon Heights; his son, Robert (Charlie) Muldoon of Dauphin Island, Alabama; grandchildren Michael (Heather) DelSignore, Matthew DelSignore, Monica (Sean) Dow, Mark DelSignore, and Mia DelSignore; and great-grandson Oliver Dow. He also leaves his sister, Mary Muldoon; brother, John (the late Hallie and the late Peg) Muldoon; nieces Jessica and Amy; and nephews Andrew and Timothy. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert (the late Barbara) Muldoon, and his niece Catherine.
