James M. McDonough of Dorchester, formerly of South Boston, passed away on March 11, 2026, at the age of 90.
He was the beloved husband for more than 50 years to the late Claire (Hines) McDonough. Devoted son of the late Patrick McDonough of Lettermullen, County Galway, Ireland, and Winifred (Mulkerrin) of Carna, County Galway, Ireland, he was also the son-in-law of the late Ernest and Margaret (Shand) Hines.
A proud graduate of South Boston High School, where he served as captain of the football team, Mr. McDonough was a U.S. Army veteran who went on to graduate from Bentley College. He worked for many years at the Post Office and later at Boston Safe Deposit and Trust. He is survived by his loving children, Ann W. Doherty and her late husband Brian of Dorchester, James M. McDonough and his wife Nancy of Abington, Paul J. McDonough and his wife Erin of Dorchester, Lisa M. Smith and her husband William of Braintree, and Steven A. McDonough and his loving partner Ali Bennett of Abington. He was the cherished grandfather of Jennifer, James, Shalin, Ryan, Brianne, Sean, Andrew, Nolan, and Michael McDonough, Margaret England, Nora and Gavin Doherty, Marcus and Steven Egan, Billy and Edward Smith, Joseph Theodore and the late Kathlyn McDonough, and Samantha Theodore, and the great-grandfather of Cameron Egan and River McNelly. He was the brother of the late Patrick McDonough and his late wife Arlene of South Boston, and the late John McDonough and his late wife Arlene of Braintree. He will be deeply missed by many nieces and nephews.
