James Gary Overstreet
May 9, 1947— March 4, 2026
Kermit, TX
James Gary Overstreet was born May 9, 1947, in Gorman, Texas, to Wilburn and Ruby (Kinser) Overstreet. He entered into Heaven on March 4, 2026, where he was greeted by a host of family and friends.
Gary graduated from Gorman High School in 1965, where stories are still told of his football prowess. After high school, he attended Texas Christian University, where he proudly wore the Horned Frog football uniform. He was later drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War.
After returning home to his family, Gary carried with him some of the turmoil of war but continued to work hard and build a life. He worked in the oil fields throughout Texas before eventually settling in Kermit, Texas, where he made his home for 43 years.
Gary was a passionate golfer who often kept extra golf clubs on hand for when a shot didn’t go as planned. He was also a talented musician who loved playing the guitar and singing with his family. When his daughters were young, he coached them and many of their friends in softball. He tried hard to teach them the game of golf, but when his patience wore thin, he would send them to the Winkler County Country Club swimming pool, where he had been a member for many years.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Wilburn and Ruby Overstreet; his brother, Neil Overstreet; his nephew, Jamie Overstreet; and the mother of his daughters, Martha Overstreet.
He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Beason and her husband Chris, and Sara Overstreet and her fiancé Marc; his sister-in-law, Karen Overstreet; his niece, Kara Bell and her husband Chris Bell; and his beloved grandchildren, Aryann Cook, Eli Martinez, Christopher Beason, Allie Beason, and Merrick Gillen.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Home Hospice, the staff of Winkler County Memorial Hospital, the Winkler County VFW family, and Gary’s many friends in Kermit who loved and cared for him over the years.
A funeral service will be on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Higginbotham Funeral Home, Gorman, Texas, in Gary's honor, with a graveside service to follow with military honors at Oaklawn Cemetery, Gorman, Texas. The family will receive loved ones on Monday, March 9, 2026, from 6:00PM-8:00PM for a visitation at Higginbotham Funeral Home.
