McDermott, age 85, a former longtime resident of Lowell and more recently of Andover, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the High Pointe House in Haverhill. He was the husband of the late Lucille M. (St. Gelais) McDermott.Born in Lowell, MA on September 15, 1940, he was a son of the late James P. and Mildred A. (Rivers) (Barris) McDermott. He was educated in the Lowell school system and was a graduate of Lowell High School.James was a proud veteran of the U.S Navy and served during the Vietnam War from 1962 until his honorable discharge in 1966, and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal.Prior to his retirement, he worked as a data communications technician for several years at Raytheon.James enjoyed cars, going sailing, traveling and taking a day trip to the casino. He also looked forward to visiting with family and friends and sharing stories of the past.He is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Patricia Fisette, Pamela Mede and her husband Dave and Kelly Smith; eight grandchildren, Alex Grondell and his spouse Brooke, Nicole Mede, Michael Bisson, Joe Bisson and his spouse Shauna, Valerie Fisette, Chelsea Fisette, Michaela Callahan and her fiancé Brad Myers and Jacob McDermott; four great grandchildren, Alexander Grondell, Cayden Callahan, Bennett Myers and Jasper Hull; three sisters and their spouses, Sheila McDermott and her husband Ed Peek, Kathy McDermott and Keith Wilhern and Colleen McDermott and Brian Boyd; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Barris; a brother-in-law, William Prim; and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Michelle Craib McDermott, grandfather of the late Robert Fisette and brother of the late Paul Barris, Patricia Harrington and Maureen Prim.Relatives and friends will be received on Tuesday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the TYNGSBOROUGH FUNERAL HOME 4 Cassaway Drive, Tyngsborough, followed by a prayer service at 12 noon in the Funeral Home.
