James Snyder ObituaryObituary published on Legacy.com by Sunset Vista Funeral Home, Cemetery & Crematory on Mar. 10, 2026.James (Jim) E. Snyder, beloved husband of Terri, passed away on Friday, February 6, 2026 at the age of 83 in Yuma, Arizona. He is survived by his children: Nathan (Jill), Jim (Jolyn), Cindie Scholer, Kevin Callahan, and Kelly Callahan. Grandchildren: Patrick, Eric (Cassidy), Jordyn, Lexie, Rachel, Amy, and Hunter and Great Grandchildren: Leo, Ava, Marley, and London. He was preceded in death by his father Jacob (Jake), mother Gladys, and infant sister, Imogene.Jim was born in The Dalles, Oregon and raised in Condon, Oregon and Mountain City, Tennessee. He joined the Army in 1957, serving almost eight years in military intelligence in Germany and Vietnam; and traveled all over Europe installing cryptographic machines. After leaving the Army he began his 25-year career with IBM (I've been moved). He lived in eight states during his career and retired while living in Damascus, Oregon.Jim met his true companion, Terri Callahan, in 1991. One of their first dates (so he could spend that Saturday with Terri) was delivering Thanksgiving meals for St. Vincent de Paul. He organized the deliveries, and with his knowledge, had it all mapped out efficiently. All of Terri's friends at St. Rose were impressed. They arrived at the rectory an hour ahead of time due to Jim's efficient planning and helped Father fix brunch for the delivery volunteers. They married on March 26, 1994 and began their 32-year adventure together with a three-month honeymoon cruise to Alaska on their 45' trawler. In 1995 they purchased an RV/Craft Shop in Quartzsite, Arizona. Seven years later they began their goal of visiting all 50 states together. They traveled to 49 states in their RV completing their bucket list item with a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands in 2023. They also traveled the world, cruise favorites being the Panama Canal and the Caribbean/West Indies. Their most memorable trip was a pilgrimage to Israel in 2019.On March 16, 2015 Jim joined the Catholic Church and began his journey of faith and service. He chose St. Vincent de Paul as his patron, and modeled St. Vincent's mission of serving the poor, sick, and marginalized with humility and love, quietly helping the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Yuma and Battle Ground, and Safe House, an organization assisting women and children from abusive circumstances. In his 70s, Jim taught himself how to use a quilting machine. He quilted for friends and family. He also took on quilting for the sewing group at Rancho Rialto, Yuma providing warmth and love for families at Safe House, Right Turn for Veterans, Amberly's Place, New Life Pregnancy Center, and Onvida Cancer Center Chemo Department-not knowing one day he would be one of those patients.Jim's greatest love and joy was his family. Grandchildren were always welcome at the farm and on camping trips. Entertaining others was his delight; be it family dinners, family reunions, or sitting around the campfire. Jim enjoyed when he was asked for advice, and was always willing to help, not only his family, but friends. He was a man of few words, but his character spoke volumes.A Funeral Mass will be held on March 12, 2026 at St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church in Yuma Arizona at 10:00 a.m.A Memorial Mass will be held this spring at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Battle Ground, Washington. The interment service with military honors will follow at Willamette National Cemetery in Oregon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Safe House, a cause close to Jim's heart.321 S. 15th Avenue • Yuma, Arizona 85364Make checks payable to Safe House with memo "for the children's needs."
