James Edward Fruin

July 24, 1937 March 7, 2026

Chicago, IL

James Edward Fruin, retired Commander of the Chicago Police Department, died peacefully at home after a long illness on March 7, 2026, with his devoted son Michael by his side. He was 88.

Born on July 24, 1937, to Ethel and James Fruin, Jim grew up in Chicago alongside his older sister Ruth. He graduated from St. Ignatius College Prep, served in the Army, and then joined the Chicago Police Department. Detective work quickly became his calling, and he advanced steadily through the ranks—sergeant, lieutenant, detective, captain—serving in multiple districts before becoming Commander of Area 5 detectives. Known for his dedication, expertise, integrity, and strong work ethic, he served the City of Chicago faithfully for 33 years.

In 1964, Jim married Gloria Mogni, and together they shared nearly six decades of marriage until her death in 2023. After retiring from the police department, he founded IFPC Worldwide, a global investigative and security firm. Drawing on his extensive law enforcement experience, Jim built an international network of professionals in intelligence, investigations, and security, growing the company into a successful enterprise that he continued to lead actively until the end of his life.

Jim loved red wine, the racetrack, playing the lottery, watching sports, and quietly slipping cash to his grandchildren. Above all, he cherished helping friends and making connections; hearing him say “I got a guy” meant the matter would be handled. His legendary stories captured the adventure, fun, and mischief that marked his life. He is survived by his son Michael (Bridget), grandchildren Eleanor, Clare, and Seamus, nine nieces and nephews, 23 grandnieces and nephews, a growing number of great-grandnieces and nephews, brother-in-law Ben (Renée) Mogni, and countless friends and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria, sister Ruth, brother-in-law Jack, nephew Jimmy Mogni, and grandnephews Andrew Mogni and Danny Fischer.
