He was predeceased by: his former wife Eva Mae Elston; his daughter Cheryl Elston; and his wife Margret Burrell Elston. He is survived by: his children, Maria Hairston (Xavier) of Taylors and James Edward Elston, Jr. (Karen) of Blacksburg, Virginia; his brother Charles Elston; his grandchildren, Xavier Hairston, Jr. of Taylors, James E. Elston III, Ethin Elston of Blacksburg, Virginia, Camara A. Hairston of Taylors and JaNia Elston Gunzel (Ramsey); and his great grandchildren, Terry J. Woodard, Jr. and Mia Hairston-Whiteside. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 12th 2026 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home & Crematory (1002 Moorman Ave NW, Roanoke, VA 24016).
