James Edgar Layton

James Edgar Layton, 82, of Winston-Salem, passed away on March 11, 2026.

Born on September 1, 1943, in Monmouth County, New Jersey, to Edgar Layton and Ruth Elizabeth Vorhees Layton, James grew up alongside his brothers Richard and Gary. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Richard.

James served his country in the United States Navy as an aviation electronics technician from 1961 to 1966. He went on to graduate from Monmouth University in 1971 with a degree in mathematics. He began his professional career with Western Electric and Lucent Technologies, later working as a programmer and retiring from IBM. Away from work, he found great joy in collecting antique automobiles and in target shooting.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Layton; his brother, Gary R. Layton; his son, James C.W. Layton and wife Heather; his daughter, Catharine E. Layton; and four cherished grandchildren.
