April 22, 1942— March 5, 2026
Woodbridge, VA
James Edward Brown was born on April 22, 1942, in Rutherford, North Carolina, to the late Charlie and Mary Lizzie Brown. He passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026, at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Virginia.
Known affectionately by many names—Jim, JB, Jim Brown, Brown, and Brownie—James was a familiar and well-liked presence whether in North Carolina, Arlington, or Woodbridge. He worked for many years as a dedicated employee with Arlington County Parks and Recreation, retiring in 2009. An avid bowler, he enjoyed regular Tuesday evening leagues during his working years and, after retirement, joined the Lois Hobbs Prime Timers league that met on Thursday mornings.
Above all, James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his daughter, Sharron Green-Smith (Jeffrey T. Smith), and his three sons, Rex, Stephen, and Jimmy Brown. He also leaves behind two granddaughters, Madelynn and Annaliese Brown, two adopted granddaughters, Chloe Johnson and Ava Washington, as well as numerous brothers, sisters, in-laws, nieces, and nephews who will carry his memory with them.
