James Clayton Roper

James Clayton Roper

June 21, 1966 March 9, 2026

Salt Lake City, UT

James Clayton “Clay” Roper, 59, of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away on March 9, 2026, after a lifelong battle with diabetes. Born on June 21, 1966, in Niceville, Florida, he grew up in Valdosta, Georgia, before making Salt Lake City his proud home.

Clay was known for his sharp wit, natural charm, and the lively spark he brought into every room. A true jack of all trades, he worked as a long-haul truck driver and excavator operator before discovering his calling as a plumber. He built his own business, an accomplishment that gave him great pride. A country boy at heart, he was most at peace outdoors, especially in the mountains, where he spent many days hunting, fishing, and simply enjoying the quiet beauty around him. He shared a special lifelong bond with dogs, cherished time spent grilling, followed his beloved Dallas Cowboys, and never shied away from a lively political discussion.

He is survived by his daughters, Ashley Roper and Morgan Roper, and his cherished grandchildren. Clay is also survived by his sister, Lisa Roper, his grandmother Henrietta Traynor, his stepfather James Colvin, his nephews Christopher and Michael Buckingham, and his niece Cheyenne Roper. He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Ann Colvin, his father Richard Wesley Roper, Sr., his brother Richard Wesley Roper, Jr., and his grandparents James and Ruby Traynor.

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to his former wife, Christie Garcia, and her husband Ben, who cared for Clay with kindness and love during the final years of his life. They also extend sincere gratitude to the compassionate staff at Pine Creek Nursing Home for the dignity and care they provided him in his last months. Clay’s laughter, charm, stubborn determination, and the way he loved leave a space that cannot be filled.
