He was a proud United States Army veteran who served his country during the Vietnam War and later built a long career as a dedicated and skilled auto mechanic.James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Known for his strong will, hardworking spirit, and quick wit, he had a personality that could brighten any room. He possessed a compassionate heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand or offer kind words to anyone in need. His empathy for others and unwavering dedication to those he loved defined the way he lived his life.Throughout his life, James took great pride in providing for his family and supporting those around him. Whether fixing a car, sharing a laugh, or offering advice, he left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.James is survived by his daughters, Amanda Stokes of Starkville, Mississippi, and Jameye Murphree of Marks, Mississippi. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Noah Murphree of Starkville, Mississippi; Olivia Giger (Jared Giger) of Merigold, Mississippi; Mia Murphree of Starkville, Mississippi; Emma Slaughter of Morgantown, West Virginia, and Joseph Slaughter, a cherished helpmate. In addition, he is survived by a host of beloved brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and friends who will continue to honor his memory.He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Murphree; his father, Arch Murphree; his mother, Ardath Murphree; and his brothers, George Murphree and Arch Murphree Jr.James will be remembered for his laughter, his unwavering work ethic, his compassion for others, and the deep love he had for his family. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.Visitation is Tuesday, March 17, 2026, 10:00am - 11:00am at Meredith Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale, MS. Funeral services are 11:00am Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at Meredith Nowell Funeral Home in Clarksdale, MS with burial in the Oakridge Cemetery.
