James A. Porenta

James A. Porenta

Grand Haven, MI

James “Jim” Porenta, age 80, of Grand Haven, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026. Born on February 24, 1946, in Grand Haven to Joseph and Alice (Engle) Porenta, Jim graduated from Grand Haven High School and remained a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church. In 1982 he married Valerie Ernst, and together they built a life centered on family, service, and their beloved community.

Jim served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Enterprise, an experience that instilled in him a lasting respect for veterans and a deep sense of duty. That commitment found lasting expression through his many years at the Charles A. Conklin American Legion Post 28, where he served as the Post’s 100th Commander, Sergeant at Arms, and active member of the Building and Grounds Committee. He could often be found lending a hand at burger nights, collecting holiday gifts for the Goodfellows, or serving with the American Legion Honor Guard, helping to provide hundreds of veterans with a dignified final tribute. He was also a longtime supporter of VFW Post 2326, where he cherished the camaraderie and shared mission of honoring those who served.

Jim retired in 2008 from the family business, Porenta’s Grand Haven Furniture. He remained an active presence in Grand Haven, most recently serving on the board of Park Place community center. He enjoyed sailing, riding his motorcycle, camping, fishing, studying history, and caring for his dogs. Above all, Jim cherished his family and found his greatest joy in the company of his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 44 years, Valerie; his son, Joseph (Shannon) Porenta; five grandchildren, Ryan, Corinne, Colin, Maureen, and Simon; sisters, Virginia (Mike) Nielsen and Judith Porenta; and brother-in-law, Mike (Jan) Ernst. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Alice Porenta.
