James A. Garnett

Dr. James A. Garnett, known to all as Jim, passed away peacefully at his home on March 5, 2026, at the age of 95, surrounded by his loving family.

Jim devoted his career to education, beginning as a teacher and advancing to superintendent of schools. His professional path led him from Naperville to Fox River Grove, Yorkville, and finally Sterling, Illinois, where he retired in 1994. In retirement, he and his wife Jane found great pleasure in traveling and spending many happy hours on the golf course. A proud Florida State University alumnus who earned his PhD there, he remained a lifelong fan of the Seminoles and the Chicago Bears, following the latter with enthusiasm even through his final season.

Jim stayed actively involved in his retirement community at Carillon of Plainfield, where he served with distinction in the homeowners association, including a term as president, always working to strengthen and improve the neighborhood he cherished. Earlier in life, he was drafted into the Army after graduating from Illinois State University during the Korean War era and later served in the Coast Guard Reserve for many years.

Above all, Jim took deep pride and joy in his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his children Jeffery Garnett, Laurel (the late Jeff) Meyers, and Jay (Cynthia) Garnett; his grandchildren Alyssa Meyers, Zachery Garnett, and Tyler Garnett; his sisters Ruth Garnett and Joan (Robert) Saraniero; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Jane, his granddaughter Emily Meyers, and his parents Albert and Adeline Garnett. The family extends their deepest gratitude to his longtime caregiver Eva, whose compassionate care and dedication brought him comfort and greatly enriched his later years.
