Tucson, AZ
Jack Raymond Barager, age 73, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away on January 19, 2026. Born on May 10, 1952, in Owen, Wisconsin, to Jim (JR) and Virginia (Berg) Barager, Jack grew up surrounded by the love of his siblings, Jean Barager of Oneida, Wisconsin, Jim (and Teena) Barager of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Barb (and Dennis) Tweedale of Madison, Wisconsin. The family spent cherished summers together at their cottage on Round Lake near New Auburn, Wisconsin, where they enjoyed fishing, boating, swimming, playing outdoors, and gathering around card games on rainy days. Those close family bonds remained strong throughout his life.
A gifted athlete, Jack excelled in football, basketball, and golf at Owen-Withee High School, earning all-conference honors and becoming club champion at Meadowview Country Club. He earned a football scholarship to North Dakota State University, where he played for legendary coach Ron Erhardt and was part of the 1970 Division II national championship team. After transferring to the University of Wisconsin, he was involved in a serious car accident that left him with extensive burns. Supported by his Owen-Withee community through the “We Back Jack” campaign, Jack recovered, returned to the university, and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1975. While at Wisconsin, he formed lifelong friendships through his fraternity, affectionately known as the “Nutty Buddies,” who continued to gather for Badger game tailgates for decades.
In 1980, Jack married Margaret (Peggy) Gruver, and together they raised three sons, Jake (fiancée Morgan), Luke, and Mike. He remained deeply involved in his sons’ lives, attending every football, baseball, and wrestling event, and opening his home and heart to their friends, many of whom affectionately called him “Red.” Jack created lasting memories during deer season at Moose River Rendezvous in the North Woods, where he shared traditions, laughter, and stories with his sons and lifelong friends. He also held a special place in his heart for his nephew and nieces, offering them guidance, laughter, and genuine care, especially during summers at the family cottage on Round Lake.
Jack built a successful career as a salesman, bringing his outgoing personality, quick wit, and warmth to every relationship. In 2005, he moved to Tucson, Arizona, where he embraced a new chapter, enjoying golf, poolside afternoons, and close friendships with fellow Wisconsin transplants. He found deep meaning in his church family at Christian Faith Fellowship, where he renewed his faith and was baptized again. Throughout his life, Jack faced challenges with quiet courage and resilience, often reminding others, “Life is good,” and to value every day. He is remembered for the laughter he brought, the steady love he gave, and the lasting impact he made on his family and friends.
