Passed March 9, 2026

River Forest, IL

J. Kevin O'Donoghue, MD, entered eternal life on March 9, 2026, peacefully at his home in River Forest. Kevin was born June 16, 1939, in Washington, D.C. to Martin F. and Mary Louise (nee Coleman) O'Donoghue. He devoted his life to his spouse, Dr. Marianne Nelson O'Donoghue, his children, and his patients, having spent over 50 years as an interventional cardiologist at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park. He was a proud graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory High School, the College of the Holy Cross and Georgetown University Medical Center. He completed his medical residencies in both internal medicine and cardiology at the University of Chicago and proudly served his country as a captain in the United States Army. Kevin met Marianne at Georgetown and followed her to Oak Park, where he worked tirelessly in service of his patients, having led the ICU and CCU at West Suburban Hospital for over 40 years. While at West Suburban Hospital, he worked closely with local and state authorities, including Senator Philip Rock, to secure funding to build and expand the cardiac center. In addition to his hospital appointments, he maintained his own practice in Oak Park, and trained residents at West Suburban. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Patrick, Martin, and Morgan, and his wife of 62 years, Marianne. He is survived by his four children: Mary Kate O'Mara (Michael), Maureen O. Hannon (Patrick Clair), Michael (Amy, nee Sperling), and Christopher (Anne, nee McGovern); 14 grandchildren: Myles, Brian, Elizabeth (Richie Bienenmen), Nicholas, and Emma O'Mara, Bridget Esteves (Wyatt), Edward (fiancée, Katelin Lawrence) and John Hannon, Kaitlyn, Ryan, Daniel, Owen, Kevin, and Brendan O'Donoghue, step grandson John Clair; great-grandson Martin Esteves; and many nieces and nephews in the O'Donoghue, Nelson and Opela families. Dr. O'Donoghue was a devout Catholic and long-time parishioner of St. Luke's Church in River Forest. He also loved to nurture his own physical health, and was an avid runner, swimmer, and handball player, engaging in friendly competition at the Union League Club and the former Lakeshore Club of Chicago. He loved to travel, especially to Europe, with his wife and children, was an avid historian and fervent reader. He instilled values of faith, intellectualism, and selflessness in his family, friends, medical colleagues and patients. Visitation will be held at Salerno Galewood Chapels, 1857 N. Harlem Ave. Chicago, IL Sunday March 15, from 4 pm to 7 pm and a Mass of Christian burial on Monday, March 16, at 10 am at St. Luke Church, River Forest. In lieu of flowers, donations to Misericordia [misericordia.com] Heart of Mercy would be appreciated.
