Irene Madeline Opsommer

Irene Madeline Opsommer passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, at the age of 93, surrounded by loved ones. Born on October 9, 1932, on Detroit’s east side, she graduated from St. Ambrose High School in 1950. She married the love of her life, George Opsommer, on October 16, 1954, and together they built a home in 1960 that became a center of love, friendship, and family gatherings.

Irene worked as an administrative assistant and secretary at Park Davis, The Cross Company, General Dynamics, and finally Warren Pipe and Supply, where she formed lifelong friendships. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martha and Camile VanNieuwenhuyze, her sister Ivonna Bruneel, her son Stephen, and her beloved husband George. She is survived by her son Michael, daughter-in-law Shawntele, and grandson Caden, whom she affectionately called her “Sunshine.” She is also survived by her nephew Gary, niece Susan (Tim), great-nieces and nephews Victoria, Julie, and Joella, along with many extended family members and friends.

Irene’s life centered on people and relationships. She loved hosting bridal and baby showers, neighborhood pool gatherings, card nights of euchre and pinochle, Sunday family dinners, and elaborate holiday meals. A devoted Catholic, she lived her faith through daily Mass, volunteering at church and school, and quiet acts of service. Highly organized, she maintained detailed photo albums, lifelong journals, and carefully categorized recipes. Shy and soft-spoken, she possessed a gentle warmth that drew people to her and left a lasting impression of kindness and generosity.

Though her family feels deep heartache at her passing, they find comfort knowing Irene is at peace and reunited with George and so many loved ones who went before her.
