Overbrook, KS

Ira D. Allen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on March 7, 2026, in Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, Missouri, at the age of 88. Born on September 10, 1937, in Tallahassee, Florida, he was the son of Winford Sheffield and Delphia Olevia (Griffen) Allen.

Ira’s journey began in Tallahassee, where he graduated from Leon High School. Following his high school years, he proudly served in the United States Army for three years, allowing him to contribute to his country during a significant time in history. Upon completing his military service, he married the love of his life, Gail Smith, whose memory continues to be cherished by their family.

Throughout his life, Ira exhibited a remarkable dedication to his work and family. After establishing roots in Tallahassee, a job relocation took him and Gail to Colorado, where they lived for seven years. In 1978, they moved to Overbrook, Kansas, where Ira continued to manage a textile store. However, his career took a new direction when he transitioned into the insurance field, ultimately becoming a partner and sales agent at Community Insurance. He found great fulfillment in this profession and remained active in it until his retirement in 2005.

Ira was not only dedicated to his professional life, but he also enjoyed a rich personal life filled with hobbies and interests. He had a penchant for seeking treasures at antique stores and flea markets, always on the lookout for unique pieces or a good bargain. He relished the camaraderie shared with friends during weekly poker games and cherished moments spent fishing, which brought him peace and joy. Although cooking may not have been his primary passion, he found immense happiness in preparing meals for those he loved, often noted for his willingness to share his culinary creations with family and friends.

Ira is survived by his sons, Tim Allen (Pat), Robert Allen (fiancée Tracy), and David Allen (Cindy), who carry forward his legacy. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Meagan, Chris, Beth, Kylie, Kary, Darby, Taelor, and Kyle, along with eight great-grandchildren. His sister, Wanda Davis, survives him as well, extending the warmth of family that Ira so valued throughout his life.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gail, whose companionship was a source of strength and joy. Ira also rejoins his parents, having left behind a family that will forever remember his laughter, kindness, and devotion.

Ira's life will be remembered for its deep contributions to family and community, as well as for the love he shared with those fortunate enough to know him. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide his family in the years to come.

Cremation is planned with a celebration of life to be held at a later date.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Overbrook American Legion 16119 S Shawnee Heights Rd., Overbrook, Kansas 66524.
