March 13, 1936— March 11, 2026
Burlington, NC
Mrs. Inez Evans Turner was born on March 13, 1939, in Alamance County to the late Brodie and Margreta Chandler Evans. The youngest of four daughters, she grew up in Burlington, North Carolina, and graduated from Jordan Sellars High School in 1954. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education from Fayetteville State University, where she pursued her deep passion for teaching. She taught for many years at Clover Garden Elementary School and Pleasant Grove Elementary School and was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
A lifelong and devoted member of Arches Grove United Church of Christ in Burlington, Inez served faithfully in numerous roles, including the Pastor’s Aid Committee, the Deaconess Committee, the Missionary Circle, and as Church Announcer and Mother of the Church. She found great joy in watching college basketball, engaging in lively discussions about her allegiances to both Carolina and Duke. She also cherished hosting family and friends and was well known for the beautiful hats she proudly wore to church each Sunday.
Inez departed this life on March 11, 2026, while resting peacefully at home. She is survived by her devoted husband, Mr. James “Bunkie” Turner; her son, Rev. James Lamont Turner, Sr.; her daughter-in-law, Ponzella Marie Turner; four grandsons, Marlon Brown of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Lamont Turner Jr. (Ashley) of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Cory Turner (Brooke) of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Neal Turner of Dallas, Texas; seventeen great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
