Imogene James of Madison, Indiana, died on March 10, 2026 at Autumn Trace in Madison. She was born on June 21, 1928 in Rush County, Indiana, the daughter of Lawrence and Ethel Morgan Mix. In 1949 she married Dr. Carroll James in Switzerland County, and the couple shared 65 years of marriage until his death.
A devoted homemaker, Imogene found joy in gardening, traveling, and the companionship of her Christian friends at Parkside Baptist Church. She loved the outdoors, watching and feeding birds, and always kept dogs as beloved companions. Throughout her married life she opened her home with care and generosity, looking after 23 people that included her own children and many elderly individuals who needed support.
She is survived by her son, Keith Austin (Ann) James of Columbia, Tennessee; grandchildren Kevin, David, Kristen, Eddie, and Amelia; her brother, Paul Thomas Mix; and several nieces and nephews. Imogene was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll; her parents, Lawrence and Ethel Mix; her son, Lawrence Alan James; her daughter, Carol Jean James; her brothers, John Edward Mix, Larry Lee Mix, and Harold Elden Mix; and her sister, Lorretta Alene Kent.
