Hunter Fitzgerald Taylor, 80, of Richmond, Virginia, died peacefully at his residence at Cedarfield on March 8, 2026. Born in Roanoke, Virginia on November 13, 1945, he was the son of the late James Vaughan Taylor and Frances Jenkins Taylor. He was preceded in death by his brother, James Vaughan Taylor, Jr., and is survived by his brother, Robert Taylor.
Hunter graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1963 and earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute in 1967. He later received a Master’s in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1971 after participating in a U.S. Atomic Energy Commission–sponsored research program at UVA on early gas centrifuge technology. He began his career in 1971 with Wiley & Wilson and went on to work in waste-to-energy and power development, founding REFCOM Corp. in 1984 and later serving as a vice president at Black & Veatch. He developed power plants in Poland and worked with Bechtel Power until his retirement in 2013.
He was a devoted husband to Catherine “Cathy” Vastine Taylor for 54 years. A loving and beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Hunter’s sense of duty and commitment to his family were unwavering. His love for VMI and his brother rats remained enduring throughout his life. He is survived by his daughters, Catherine “Katie” Wilkinson (Adam), Elizabeth Johnston (Bayne), and Emily Whittemore (Alex); granddaughters, Lucy Whittemore, Viola Wilkinson, and Mary Johnston; and grandsons, Edward Wilkinson, Vaughan Johnston, William Whittemore, and Hunter Johnston.
