Elkton, VA

Hugh Lamont "Monty" Copper, 87, of Elkton, Virginia, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Born on January 3, 1939, in Waynesboro, Virginia, he was the son of the late Hugh Laughlin and Dorothy (Snow) Copper.

A graduate of Waynesboro High School, Monty served his country in the United States Army before building a long career as a sales representative with Economy Beauty Supply and Bruton's. An avid outdoorsman from a young age, he embraced life fully through motocross, camping, hunting, and the careful curation of a cherished gun collection. He also found great joy on the golf course, where he spent many happy hours.

On August 31, 1968, Monty married the love of his life, Sheila (Comer) Copper. Their devoted partnership lasted 58 years. Larger than life, he was known for his constant smile, ready laugh, and love of dancing with friends. Above all, he was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and loyal friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Mike Herring, and his brother Ronald Dee Copper. Monty is survived by his wife, Sheila; son John Herring and wife Jane; daughters Leslie McAlister and husband Wayne, and Monika Deaton and husband Will; grandchildren April Hicks (Bryan), Jonah Herring, Brandy Campbell (Dusty), Avery Deaton, Graham Deaton, and Ellory Deaton; and great-grandchildren Emma Sellars, Logan Sellars, Emily Campbell, Luke Campbell, and Abby Campbell.
