Howard Thomas Young

November 25, 1924 March 9, 2026

Savannah, GA

Howard Thomas Young, age 101, passed away on March 9 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. Born on November 24, 1925, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, he was the youngest of four boys. A proud WWII Navy veteran, Howard served in the South Pacific under Admiral Chester Nimitz. After the war, he moved to Ohio, earned a degree in accounting with a minor in economics from the University of Toledo through night school, and spent 35 years with Owens-Illinois, Inc., managing the company’s glass containers and pricing division.

Upon retiring at age 58 in 1983, Howard moved to Savannah and devoted the next four decades to volunteer service with numerous organizations. He gave countless hours to the VA Hospital, Isle of Hope United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 184, Republican Council of Savannah, Coastal Alzheimer’s Association, AmeriCorps Seniors, Savannah Senior Center, Coastal GA Cares, Generation One, and the Retired & Seniors Volunteer Program. He was honored with many certificates and awards for his efforts, took part in a Veterans Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., and was celebrated by his community on his 100th birthday.

Those who knew him will remember his industrious spirit, generosity, and the simple joy he brought by handing out mini Tootsie Rolls wherever he went.

Howard is survived by his nephew, Terry Young of Longview, Texas, and his great-niece, Kerry Young.
