Howard Southworth Sr.

Howard E. Southworth Sr., 93, of Woodsville, New Hampshire, passed away on March 6, 2026, at the Grafton County Nursing Home.

Born on April 6, 1932, in West Fairlee, Vermont, to Dewitt and Violet (Sumner) Southworth, Howard grew up attending local schools before beginning work in the area mines after completing the eighth grade. He spent his working life in construction and logging, operating both independently and for various companies in the region.

An avid outdoorsman, Howard found deep satisfaction in hunting, fishing, and raising horses. He was a familiar and respected competitor at the North Haverhill, Bradford, and Fryeburg fairs, where he enjoyed pulling horses and oxen.

He was predeceased by his parents; brothers Roy, Jay, and Richard Southworth; sister Mary Clark; and his long-term partner, Kay Griggs. Howard is survived by his children, Howard E. Southworth Jr. and his wife Linda of Pittsburg, New Hampshire, Gloria Melendy of Fairlee, Vermont, and Donna Hood and her husband Scott of Flagler, Florida; his brother Wayne Southworth of White River Junction, Vermont; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A private interment will take place in the spring at the Horse Meadow Cemetery Annex in North Haverhill.
