September 20, 1939— March 13, 2026
Chambersburg, PA
Howard French Affeldt, affectionately known as Frenchie, was born on September 20, 1939, in Ellicott City, Maryland, to the late Albert and Carolyn Affeldt, and passed away on March 13, 2026. Raised in Dayton, Maryland, during the 1940s and 1950s, he grew up doing farm work while learning to fix, build, and drive nearly anything. He often shared warm stories of his early life, making even the difficult times sound perfect to those who loved hearing them.
He joined the Army in 1957 and served in Germany as a Combat Engineer. While in the service, he boxed and earned the title of Company Champion. Frenchie was a skilled mechanic and carpenter throughout his life. He had a passion for racing, frequently taking his Chevy Nova to the track, and remained a loyal fan of the Baltimore Orioles, the Ravens, and the Colts during their years at Memorial Stadium. He loved music, attending bluegrass festivals as well as country and rock and roll concerts, and found great joy in watching westerns. Above all, he cherished his role as Pop Pop.
Frenchie was preceded in death by his foster mom, Ms. Day; his siblings Hilda, Sonny, Doris, and Mary; his son Bigie Lee; and many other loved ones. He is survived by his wife of more than 52 years, Dixie Ann Affeldt; daughters Angie and Sherry; sons Scott and Hookie; daughters-in-law Sherry and Tashia; grandchildren Bailey, Cassie, Chelsea, Brittnee, Emma, Dametreise, and Kipp, along with several great-grandchildren and other relatives.
He will be remembered as a man who told the best stories, offered wise advice, and brought laughter to everyone around him. Hilarious, genuine, and always willing to lend a hand to family and friends, Frenchie will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
