Horace E. Russell, Jr.
Manchester, CT
Horace “Butch” Edward Russell Jr., 84, of Manchester, passed away on March 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 9, 1941, in Manchester, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Horace Edward and Eleanor (Crockett) Russell. A graduate of Manchester High School, Horace spent his career in grocery services, beginning as a teenager at Highland Park Market and later working for First National/Finest Supermarkets and Edward’s Food Warehouse before becoming a store manager at Stop & Shop. He also served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the Army Reserves.
He married his high school sweetheart, Sandra, and together they shared 63 years of marriage and three children. Horace was a devoted family man who cherished annual vacations with his children to Cape Cod and later continued those trips with Sandra. The couple also enjoyed traveling to the Caribbean and the Cayman Islands. One of his greatest passions was gardening; he spent countless hours each spring and summer tending to his flowers and vegetables. His love of the outdoors began early with hunting and trapping, and he enjoyed fishing with his sons. He was also an avid target shooter and a proud member of the Manchester Coon and Fox Club.
Horace is survived by his wife, Sandra; his children, James (Barbara) Russell, Stephen (Jennifer) Russell, and Dean Russell; his grandchildren, Alexandra and Daniel Russell, Allyson (Robby) Lightsey, Zachary Russell, and Edward and Thomas Russell; his siblings, Michael Russell and Kathleen Chapell; his sister-in-law, Mary Russell; his daughter-in-law, Saeko Russell; and many beloved nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Russell, and his brother-in-law, William Chapell.
