October 28, 1931— March 10, 2026
Bakersfield, CA
Hollis Douglas Shannon, born on October 28, 1931, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026, at the age of 94. A standout athlete from an early age, Hollis excelled in swimming, football, and basketball. He earned Valley Championship titles in football and swimming at Bakersfield High School, achieved All-American honors in swimming at Bakersfield College while playing basketball, and continued his basketball career at Fresno State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He later received a Master’s Degree in Education from California Lutheran University. Throughout his life, he remained active and found particular joy in golf, which strengthened many cherished friendships.
Hollis served with quiet dignity and compassion in the United States Air Force as a Personal Affairs Officer. After his military service, he dedicated 37 years to education and athletics at East Bakersfield High School. As a coach, he led the swimming team to eight league championships and the varsity football team to two co-league championships. He concluded his career as Athletics and Activities Director, supporting a wide range of student programs. His leadership extended beyond the school, as he served as President of the South Yosemite League, President and state representative for the Central Section CIF, and President of the Kern County Officials Association. In recognition of his contributions, he was named Central Section Athletic Director of the Year and was inducted into the East Bakersfield High School Hall of Fame, the Bakersfield High School Hall of Fame, and the Kern County Officials Association Hall of Fame.
More than wins and losses, Hollis believed athletics taught character, discipline, and integrity. As a teacher, coach, and administrator, he mentored generations of young people with steady guidance and encouragement, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. He lived a life of service, dedication, and deep commitment to helping others reach their full potential.
Above all, Hollis cherished his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Joan Verna Shannon. He is survived by his children, Charles Shannon (Rose) and Dan Shannon (Diane); grandchildren Brock Shannon (Alicia), Carly Prendez (Rudy), and Leah Baldwin; and nine great-grandchildren.
