Herschel Lee Thorn, 66, of Valdosta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026. Born on January 18, 1960, to the late Herman H. Thorn and Willie Alice Moon Thorn, he grew up with a strong work ethic that carried him into a long career as a long-distance truck driver. He later retired from Swift Transportation.
Herschel cherished simple joys, especially fishing whenever he could and spoiling his two beloved dogs, Lady Bird and Pumpkin. He and his son created elaborate Christmas and Halloween displays at their home that drew neighborhood admiration and even occasional television coverage. A skilled hobby mechanic, he was always ready to help friends and neighbors with repairs. Those who knew him remember his genuine spirit, his quick wit, and his commitment to making others laugh. He often told his wife that if he went a day without making her smile, he wasn’t doing his job. Above all, Herschel treasured his family and spent every moment he could with his granddaughter, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Randy Thorn, Archie Thorn, Jerry Thorn, and Leo Moon.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Vickie McEachern Thorn; daughters, Samantha JoAnn Thorn and Alicja Janiszewska; son, Herschel Leroy Thorn and wife Kimberly; sisters, Patricia Paul and Rachael Mears; granddaughter, Rylee Hayes; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
