Born on January 18, 1937, in Greenwood, SC, she was the daughter of the late Octavia and Henry Augustine.Retta was a proud graduate of Greenville High School. She was a devoted member of Taylors First Baptist Church for over 50 years and an active member of the Ferguson/Dorn Sunday School class. She also enjoyed the fellowship of a loving group of seniors (the XYZs) and looked forward to their Monday meals at the church. In addition, she enjoyed teaching special education Sunday school for over 10 years and remained devoted to this group even after she was no longer the teacher. When Retta was not active with her church, you could find her spending time with her neighbors. She loved working in her yard, and everyone in her class knew that Retta would be sending that special greeting card on their birthday. She dedicated many years of her life as an assistant in the orthodontics industry, leaving a lasting impression on the colleagues and patients she served. Her warmth and kindness were evident to all who crossed her path, and she will be deeply missed by those who had the privilege of knowing her.Retta leaves behind her loving stepson, Byron R. Sherman (Deb), of Mobile, Alabama. She also leaves behind her loving nephews, Don Elrod (Gail), Randy Walker (Dana), and Rodney McElrath; as well as her niece, Sharon Echols (Derrick). She is also survived by numerous cousins whom she loved and deeply cherished. Each of them carries a fragment of her spirit and will forever hold her memory close to their hearts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willis (Will) Sherman; her sisters, Carolyn McElrath and Elizabeth (Lib) Elrod; and her brother, James Walker. We invite all who knew and loved Retta to celebrate her life with us in the chapel at Taylors First Baptist Church.
