Helen Vanides

October 15, 1935 March 4, 2026

Englewood, NJ

Helen Vanides, born Helen Regas on October 15, 1935, in New York, New York, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2026, at Englewood Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Angulina Regas. Helen cherished memories of her childhood, filled with friends, school, summers in Tottenville with extended family, and her deep connection to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church. She is survived by her beloved sister, Maria, and was preceded in death by her brother, Paul.

In 1952, Helen met Homer Vanides at a church event, and he became the great love of her life. They married on June 10, 1956, and shared nearly 70 years of devoted marriage until her passing, with Homer by her side. The couple welcomed daughters Daria Voorhees-DeLong in 1957 and Dina Vanides Christoffers in 1968. After moving from New York to Englewood, New Jersey, in 1959, they became active members of the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. John The Theologian. Helen attended church faithfully for many years, volunteered at the annual Festival, and formed lasting friendships through her involvement with the Kali Parea.

Helen enjoyed a distinguished 49-year career at Barnard College, beginning as a clerk in the Bursar’s Office and retiring in 2002 as Director of Budget and Planning. An avid reader who often completed more than 100 books a year, she also found great joy at the beach, particularly in Belmar, Long Branch, Wildwood, and above all in Greece, which she visited more than a dozen times with Homer. Their travels also took them to Spain, where her sister Maria lived, as well as Morocco and Portugal. Helen was known for hosting warm holiday gatherings, always welcoming family and friends with generosity and kindness.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 70 years, Homer; daughters Daria (the late David) and Dina (Keith); grandchildren Samantha, Warren (Lindsey), Angelina, Sophia, Blair, Heather, Shannon, and Sarah; seven great-grandchildren; and her sister Maria. Helen will be remembered for her strength, wit, and faith, as a devoted wife, fiercely protective and caring mother, warm and loving grandmother and great-grandmother, and as a loyal, generous friend to all who knew her.
