Hannah Cavallaro

Hannah Cavallaro

January 16, 1937 March 8, 2026

White Plains, NY

Hannah Cavallaro, née Gilmartin, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2026, at The Kensington in White Plains, New York, at the age of 89.

Born in Mott Haven in the South Bronx, Hannah was the second of four children and the eldest daughter of Irish immigrant John Joseph “Pop” Gilmartin from County Leitrim and his wife Hannah “Moma” McDonald Gilmartin. Growing up during the Depression and World War II, she learned early to care for others, quietly cooking, cleaning, and looking after her younger sisters, Mary and Patricia, without complaint. That steadfast sense of responsibility remained a defining trait throughout her life.

A determined student, Hannah attended St. Luke’s Grammar School and All Saints High School before training in business skills at The Assisium. She pursued further education at night at Pace University, studying Business Management while working full-time and taking summer courses to finish sooner. Her professional career in corporate management analysis was distinguished; in 1970 she was chosen to help develop and implement productivity standards across her company, presenting recommendations to senior executives and earning promotion alongside her male colleagues at a time when such advancement was rare. She retired in May 1987 to spend more time with her husband, Tony.

On March 10, 1973, Hannah married Anthony “Tony” Cavallaro at Immaculate Conception Church on Gun Hill Road in the Bronx. Though they had known each other only briefly through work, their eight-week courtship led to a deeply loving marriage filled with laughter, mutual devotion, and shared passions for opera and classical music. They attended Saturday broadcasts on WQXR, subscribed to the Metropolitan Opera, and spent three years treating themselves to nearly every Broadway show after working part-time at a bank in White Plains. Tony preceded her in death on November 11, 2001, and Hannah missed him every day afterward.

A lifelong devout Catholic, Hannah attended Mass weekly, prayed daily, and quietly supported Immaculate Conception Church in Tuckahoe through both her time and resources. She was an avid reader from the age of ten, when a nun introduced her to the public library, eventually amassing a collection of more than a thousand books spanning history, archaeology, theology, mythology, sociology, biographies, and fiction. She read the entire Old Testament and preferred evenings spent with books and music rather than television. Practical and orderly, she made lists for everything and believed careful planning created a stable and meaningful life. Her quick Irish wit, kindness, patience, and steady encouragement made her a beloved pillar of strength for her family.

Hannah volunteered for many years at Feeding Westchester alongside her dear friend Linda, and she remained a longtime supporter of chamber music concerts in Pleasantville. In 2017, she and her sister Patricia traveled to Ireland to visit their father’s homeland in Leitrim and Sligo, where they met cousins and found the journey deeply meaningful.

Predeceased by her husband Tony, her brother John, and her sisters Mary and Patricia, Hannah is survived by her loving nieces Sarah Mahrle-Thomas and Steph Mahrle, her grand-nieces and grand-nephews Anabelle, Adriana, Aliyah, Will, and Kai, and extended family in Ireland and the United States.
