Born in Asmara, Eritrea on September 13, 1923, to Kassa Woldesamuel and Letberhan Gebru, Mama lived a life of extraordinary grace, endurance, and love - a life measured not only in years but also in the generations she inspired and the hearts she touched.Mama's remarkable journey took her across continents and oceans throughout her long and full life. From her roots in Eritrea, she lived and made her home in Ethiopia, Italy, Mali, and Brazil, before settling in the United States, where she resided in Nevada, California, Oregon, and finally Florida. Each place she called home and she carried the richness of each culture and community with her wherever she went.Mama is preceded in death by her husband, Afeworki Nemariam Debesai; her siblings Nighisti, Tekle, Zegai, Weldai, and Weldeyesus; and her children who passed away before her: her daughter Algainesh Afewerk, her sons Ghermay Afeworki and Mekonnen Afewerk, and her daughters Bisrat Afeworki and Aster Afewerk and her son-in-law, Assefa Tessema. She is survived by her son, Mesfin Afework; her sisters, Isgheharia and Letense; and her daughters-in-law, Terhas Fessehaye, Tsegemariam Aberra, and Francisca Afework. The warmth of her love extended to her fifteen grandchildren and their families - Binyam Mekonnen, Joy Assefa, Ezana Assefa, Yodit Mekonnen, Nemariam Mesfin, Henock Assefa, Abesolom Fidel, Arsema Mesfin, Hermon Ghermay, Luwam Ghermay, Samra Ghermay, Junior Mekonnen, Afework Mekonnen, Akhnaton Mekonnen, and Abraham Mekonnen - each of whom carries her spirit forward.God further blessed Mama with eighteen great-grandchildren: Nadia Mekonnen, Hanna Mekonnen, Anaeb Ezana Assefa, Tamikya Charles, Ghermy Wei Fidel, Gabriel Wei Fidel, Nathan Mesfin, Yovela Mesfin, Noah Mesfin, Abigail Mesfin, Eleni Assefa, Josef Celestine, Naomi Assefa, Mia Celestine, Zemirah Hopkins, Jahmir Geerman, Jazmin Magalona, and Makonnen O'Matuna Afework. In a final, joyful moment, she was honored to hold her great-great-grandson, Lucas Campbell - a living reminder of a century of family, faith, and love. The family warmly extends their deepest, heartfelt gratitude to Astrice, affectionately called Wubalem by Mama, whose years of compassion, patience, and dedicated care for Mama have truly been a wonderful gift. The family also wishes to thank Kesis Biruk Ayele and the Mekane-Tsehay Medhanealem Ethiopian Orthodox Church community for their support, prayers, and visits, which provided immense comfort and blessing.Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, at Baird-Case Jordan-Fannin Funeral Home, followed by burial at the City of Pompano Beach Cemetery.
